COMBINE A CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR TOUR

 Discover an ancient tradition

The European Christmas markets, also known as Christkindlmarkt, date back to the late middle ages and are held in the four weeks of Advent. In simple terms they embellish a tradition of towns and villages expressing joy in the heart of the Festive Season.

Usually held in the old cobbled stone town centres and surrounded by historic houses and churches, local craftsmen, restaurateurs and ordinary townsfolk set up shop in rows of wooden stalls. They sell everything from mulled wine served from giant, steaming cauldrons to handcrafted wooden toys, pottery, gifts and colourful decorations.

Pink cheeked children wrapped in woollen hats and bright red mittens enjoy merry-go-rounds, while parents consider the freshly cut Christmas trees, looking for that one perfect tree to take home. Brass bands and carol singers gather on ancient stone steps and compete with the sizzle of bratwurst sausages and the raised voices of locals intent on laughter and happiness.

We give you time to explore

Originating in Germany, Christmas markets are now popular through much of Europe and take on all shapes and sizes. The skill is to define which are the most important to visit. We have done so!

Each of our Christmas itineraries has been carefully designed to provide ample time in at least one of the great markets such as Nurnberg, Vienna, Montreux, Strasbourg and Salzburg. We also visit additional markets such as Wurzburg, Munich, and Bern and the smaller, ‘just perfect’ markets such as in Rothenburg and Innsbruck (both about 100 metres from our hotels). The markets are best enjoyed at dusk when fairy lights twinkle and candle flames flicker and shimmer. What memories!
