Great Trains of Australia

THE GHAN

The Ghan. It’s an odd name for a train but in Australian history it is a living legend. The legend has soared to new heights with the extension of The Ghan journey to Darwin. When The Ghan first departed Adelaide for Alice Springs, it was always intended that it would one day travel through to Darwin. More than 70 years on, that dream has become reality.

You can take in the views, enjoy the entertainment and information on the video screen or even relax with a drink and a meal in the Red Service Diner. (Gpt-GSR)

THE INDIAN PACIFIC

The Indian Pacific gives you two oceans on one of the world's longest and greatest train journeys. But most of your cruising will be across the vast continent of Australia. From the spectacular Blue Mountains to the treeless plains of The Nullarbor, where the train travels the world's longest straight stretch of railway track (478 kilometres),

SOUTHERN SPIRIT

The Southern Spirit is Australia's most luxurious train offering unique rail cruise and tour itineraries each summer. Journeys usually travel between Adelaide and Brisbane through Melbourne and Sydney, each one includes touring and side trips during the 6 day trip. Contact Guidepost Rail Tours or see our Rail Tours page for details of next summers rail tours.

THE OVERLAND

The Overland commenced service in 1887, pioneering intercapital rail travel between Melbourne and Adelaide. The century old name came from the term "Overlander", an adventurer who had travelled across the country. In recognition of its history, The Overland’s emblem is the Kookaburra, symbolic of a new day and new beginnings. The Overland today remains a comfortable and convenient way to travel between these two southern cities.
